Low end achievable via a bit of sheeting in on the bar maybe?

C'mon🤣

V1 Frigate is a different beast to get on foil compared to PR. I prefer the Frigate I have PRV2s which I struggle with. No top end compared to v1 Frigates, great low end and better collapse, redeploy is terrible always wants to fly backwards. Hope to getV2 Frigates soon.

Having had many sessions now on the 4.3 and5m PR2 both DW, Dw/up wind and even wave riding - I have to say I completely agree with Hillys observations. Got me stuffed what ozone were thinking dumbing down the V1 - getting my 4.5m frigate soon - so will report back. I’ve got a lot of good things to say about the after burner but will politely decline being a negative nancy on the PR V2. But … wtf. ??

That would be a first 😂

Ah that’s not true I just refuse to let you know I agree with you :)… but you are bang on about the PRV2 … I’m actually really pissed off about it to be frank. The world will work it out eventually. Look it’s ideal for a beginner I suppose or someone who just wants to rip downwind.

Care to elaborate.

In my experience the PRV2 is far superior than the V1 and particularly for intermediate to advance riders but it needs to be harnessed to get the performance. It rips upwind very fast when pushed and faster than any single skin I have encountered yet and that includes the Naish which feels half a size smaller.

Reports seem to indicate the Frigate feels a full size smaller.

Had 4.3/5 PRV2 and found it had heaps of grunt to get going but got over powered easily and did not go upwind anywhere near as well as my V1 Frigates. And when you redeploy they go backwards ffs. Not just me a few have similar issue.

what hilly said above AND … they are diabolical packing down in waves. Frigate / quest pack down easy - collapse completely. Even the new PR is still filled with too much air in the cells.

This marketing that the PR V2 is for intrermediate / advanced rider thing… nope.

I feel they have dumbed down the PR so much - where it flies in the window - it would actually make a better beginner / intermediate para. Advanced you want the after burner.

The frigate and even the quest requires more trim adjustment on the fly - because both of them want to sit further around in the window. They in turn have a much better angle upwind. Yes I go upwind far better on the so called numpty quest than the PR v2… and there is no comparison with the new frigate. The frigate however doesn’t burn upwind as well as the after burner in the same hands for sure.

It’s just a fact where they all sit on the spectrum. We’ve had them all here for 3 weeks - every day - three sessions - Wave, upwind down wind - full sends … and the results are conclusive not just opinions.

To get back on point ..... I've spent a while on the Frigate V2 now and I like it so much I bought one - a 3.5m.
I've been testing on a 4m and it has some serious wind range. Low end - feels like a 4.3m PRV2 would feel if it was 0.3m smaller, I'm not sure I buy into the idea that you need to size up.

The low end of it is mostly a technique thing, for sure it is easier to access the low end on the PRV2 as you don't need to do anything to access it, just pump and go, with the Frigate v2 you need to reign in the back of the bar and get it to sit deeper in the window. Once you do that you can get some decent pumping going and get up on foil.

Agree with this. The V1s were the same just a different technique to wings that fly deeper in the window.

Now i know you have been around a while and I mean no disrespect but it defies logic that you can't smoke both a frigate v1 and a quest upwind on a PRV2 in both angle and speed. No sense at all. The frigate V1 and the PRv1 both made very good angles that are still a bench mark for single skins but its in a narrow range and much slower. The quest can't even compete with two V1's

Harness?
Switch?
Now if your answer is no to one or both of these then yes I agree with you on the upwind.

This is very relevant to the topic because it gets to the point of why someone might be suited to the frigate and in what circumstances.

Righto, I bought two PRV2s after Gav’s review, which was glowing enough to guide ships into Fremantle Harbour. Coming off the Frigate V1s in 4.3/5, I thought I was in for a religious experience. Instead, I got something resembling a religious experience, except I was the one doing all the suffering. 😂
Underwhelmed doesn’t even come close. They reminded me a lot of the 777 PT Skin I had. Heaps of grunt off the mark, so initially you’re thinking, “Fark me, these things go!” Then you point them upwind and discover they’ve got the windward ability of a shopping trolley with a dodgy wheel. And as soon as the wind picks up, they get overpowered quicker than a bloke in boardies getting caught in a Perth winter squall.
Anyway, just got in from a session on the Frigate V2 4.5m, and holy dooley, it’s chalk and cheese. The upwind performance absolutely smashes the PRV2. Night and day. It actually goes upwind rather than just giving you the emotional support of pretending to.
I’m starting to wonder if Gav was reviewing the same kites, or if he’d accidentally strapped a couple of rocket boosters to his.
Only a couple of gripes with the new Frigate: the bar is long enough to double as a pool cue, and the more HA outline makes getting the tips out of the water on a light-wind relaunch a bit of a circus act. You’re out there flapping around like a stunned mullet, trying to convince the bloody thing that flying is actually its job.
But overall, the Frigate V2 is a massive step up where it matters to me. The PRV2s can go and have a good long think about what they’ve done. 😂

Do you have the retract length on the 3.5m by chance? I don't see any published line lengths.

Do these give a nice concertina upon retract? Or, are they similar to pocket rocket that needs collecting?

No sharp lines/stitching issues?

All fair questions.
To say I’m disapointed is an understatement. I cannot add much more to Hillys very accurate description including the slight negatives.

I do tend to ride toe side more than I like but do switch every other tack
or so. JL from full tilt switched all the time and i’d challenge most to get the angles and speed he gets and has had the exact same experience.

As I said earlier we were doing 3-4km bombs out past a massive feed break … to get bound the outer ningaloo reef and even this outside reef break to capture more energy and shape in the runners. Did it nearly everyday for 3 weeks. I was very aware of the angles i was doing relative to the 10
foot waves coming in at the outer break … to bloody avoid it !!

Got on the quest for a couple of days after using the similar sized PR in similar winds (its clock work up here) and fck me I nearly hit the break and had to bear off Downind. On the PR both V1 and V2 (which i will argue has an even worse angle of attack) i’d be trying to hardest to even get close to the break and even had to do a tack or two. Got on the frigate and i ended up inside the break - had to bear downwind then take a long reach beyond it.

The guy with the afterburner was doing even harder angles !! So it’s not a brand thing - but for some unknown reason ozone has totally dumbed down the Pr V2. And if you try and hold it hard upwind the damn tips collapse on you. And man do you have to muscle it around the window.

We also did a number of outer fleeced wave sessions. On the PRv2 we came in every time and said “this wave thing with a para - not sure it works - better on a wing”. Then we did a session on the quest and frigate … came in and went “okay this has legs! “. once collapsed it was far superior to having a wing. Even the new PR just doesn’t collapse the leading edge nearly
enough - too much damn air in the cells. Makes for a frantic pack down apart from the problem of pulling you DW off the wave. The frigate and quest just collapsed completely - grab the whole lot - off ya go .. then tidy it up once you get through the critical section. to start hitting the waves walls again.

As I said it’s night and day.

Look the PR is easier to use. You have to be aware of your subtle trim on the frigate especially … as it’s a race horse that’s wants to gallop into the window. But doesn’t take long to tune in your biomechanics. But comparing performance of the PR to the frigate .. forget it - PR shouldn’t even by spoken about in the same sentence … they are not comparable in any area. Not one.

Which really really REALLY pissed me off.

The other thing I have done is move the harness line more to the centre away from the A lines. Makes toe side way easier to head hard up wind. Struggled with the long bar together my hand comfortably in the right place. Works well now.
