I was thinking about organizing some casual races from Pelican Pt to Lucky Bay and back - two laps maybe? Saturday or Sunday arvos. Nothing serious - just a bit of fun and something different and a bit of challenge for those not heavily into freestyle or wave riding ... yet :-)

Anyone interested?

make sure you don't run them between about 2-4.30pm on those days as their is a hell alot of racing out their, dinghys and yachts and they (including myself) won't be too impressed wwith kiters in the middle of melville water, especially if someone drops their kite. it's already busy enough as it is out there.
just keep that in mind, otherwise sounds good.

are you just diregarding what i said?
oh well if you decide to do it with 100's of yachts and dinghies out there then enjoy having every yacht club on the river being on your back. i thought we were trying to stop kiting from getting banned??? it doesn't worry me though you can do what you like coz i don't kite the river so don;t give a rats but yachties are a rich and powerful bunch of ppl in numbers with very conservative views so i wouldn't piss them off by doing something like this straight through their races.
(if i have misniterpreted ur post i apologise)

i am chilled gruezi. just making a point that i feel i am entitled to make having sailed dinghies and yacht on melville water for 12 years now. i know how they'll react....
is this not constructive criticism? last time i checked it is.

Laser states this weekend(sailing)I heard a few mates mentioning that they had to book the section of the river for the states? would this be true as there is often a lot of activity on the water(weekends?
Thanks and sounds like a descent idea,

Cool hos

Discussion of this sort is constructive. I too think about the other users of the water, and I'm certain if IY organises something like this , there will be proper boundries in place.........so that everybody is happy. I in fact feel that the yachties kinda like watching us out there Yachties have been very helpful to me in the past when I lost my board once, and I always give them a wave and a

yeah you can book parts of the river. they do it alot for nationals on the river. i remember the 14's javs cherubs and a couple of others all had their nationals on melville water at the same time it was a bit of chaos! and reqd. different areas for each course.

i'm just giving a few tips from someone who has been on the melville water scene for 12 yrs, take them or leave them but no tips should be totally disregarded imho.

do you wear one of those shirts that has your team name on it and gloves because you only actually go sailing once a year.

peli point to lucky bay is a pretty common jaunt for a ton of windsurfers, I don't see them having many problems. Yeah I might of been a little harsh, I have sailed this route numerous times and never ever had a problem. I Just stay well out of the ****en way of everyone. Aslong as its not a competitive race all riders should be able to get out of the way of yachts and dinghys

Yes I'm in Ian. I've been wanting to do this for ages, but never wanted to risk it on my own. In fact I would like to see this become a more regular thing, to help people realize they can actually get well away from the shallows and windsurfers. I also agree that the river can be very crowded. I've sailed it too and you wouldn't want to be there at the time all the races converge. Before 2pm and after 4pm Saturday is pretty clear.

Hosko is correct in what he says, on weekends there is loads of boats out there and there will be some out there who will drop his kite and then it becomes a safety issue.

My suggestion would be Melville to Point Walter stay above the last marker( Melville guys know which one) out past the pole surfers. You could put in a few markers to so all kiters stay out of the boats way and stay up wind of them along the shore line. As long as we stay out of the protected area along Burke drive all should be ok.

Will this still achieve what you are planning Ian, with a bit of imagination it should work and the Melville guys would love to kick some Pelli Point butt!!!!

each class of yacht has to nominate what buoys they use at what time etc so hosko is right.... how ever get over it and just have a social race at 4pm after most of the yachties are in the bar. easy.

or have the race at woodies...flat water in the north bay..now that would be good

melville point walter isnt do able on a kite. Well it is but very ****, you have to stick over on the dalkieth side, but its very very sketchy. Couldn't really have a race there. Could have a race say melville beach to the dalkieth yacht club deep water marker to majestic point then back upwind to melville. Nice little triangle with a beam reach a broad reach and some beating

Well, shall we organise something....starting here...

What about next weekend. Melville Vs Pelli Point. Start Melville, kites on water at 3.45. Kick off 4pm. Or is this too early.?

Relay style or course style ????? Relay would be a blast..

WTF - next weekend sounds great
Youngy can get this sorted with his eyes closed
Melville Kiters were about set to throw down the gauntlet to the rest of perth for a series of 'home-n-away' local beach, social day freestyle comps anyhow.
Course racing sounds like a whole easier way WTG.
So lets kick it off with Melville Kiters vs Peli Pt next weekend.
Youngy - if you can set the ground rules & course for a workable event Melville Kiters will volunteer to do all the organising as the host beach for round 1.

OK It's on! Let's KISS (keep it simple stupid - unless you're a hot chick of course :-) It's not a serious race. No entry fees. No officials. Turn up and kite on the day if you want. You should be a WAKSA member to ensure you are insured.

Sat 18 Feb.

Briefing at 4pm @ grassed area East of carpark - including sychonization of watches.

Start @ 4:30pm precisely - standing in the shallows or already riding - your choice as long as you stay behind (East) the start line and keep clear of each other.

Course: Peli Point to Lucky Bay (I'll try and get a map published this week) - using existing markers.
Start/finish line anywhere East of a line between the boat ramp and the Red channel marker.
Kite upwind across to Melville around a marker - any suggestions Melville guys? I was thinking the large marker off the sandbar NNW of the Melville carpark? Or maybe the Melville kiters bouy? Can someone provide a map of it's exact position?
Port (left) tack around the mark then return to the finish.

Unless we can get a volunteer, keep your own time and publish on this post later (if you wish) - Integrity required :-)

Normal right of way rules apply (to particpants as well as respecting other water users)

Particpate at your own risk. No safety craft or other support will be provided.
