Sounds perfect Ian..

Should use the furthest 50m marker buoy, closest to the windsurfers carpark, west of Gruiezi's bench.

Start/Finish at Peli?? nah i reckon start/finish at melville, more room??

Next sat it is... cool hope there is wind 30kn plus...hehehehehe

Agreed with Reli....start finish at Melville seems better as there is a lot more space, and it is so conveniently close.

Either way (leave that open 4 discussion)
Melville 'launch & land only zone' bouys are 50M offshore. The southernmost is immediately off Ness St. We cannot use this bouy as a 'go around' marker as that would take kiters into the restricted area
Either as a start line or go-around marker we (I) will install a 2nd temporary bouy 25M outside the 50M limit. It will be distinguished by flying a white flag with a big red "M". (for Melville )

I will be teaching until just before the start so I won't be able to make a start @ Melville.

Better to tack upwind first then sprint to the finish IMO anyway.

I'd dispute there being more room at Melville - especially for a standing start - heaps of setup room at PP if you include the beach up to the CALM sign.

You Melville guys can organize the next one - Sat 25 Feb?

Ok sounds like a plan developing.

phil, stick the buoy out this week, i'll help if need be am off work for 12 odd days yeaaaaahhhhh. (so there will be no wind)

Start at Pelli point, arrive whenever you like but start race round 4pm as per Ians post.

Tack up to melville, round the flag buoy, zoom back to pelli, first one in wins!!

Last one in treats all others to guinness and pies. VB, have your wallet open

We host the sat after...25th

AWwwRight - looks like its a goer.
So we have got a few basics fully sorted :-
The Inaugural WA Kiters Short Course Speed Challenge.
Host Beach - Pelican Point
Technical Director - Ian (kiss) Young
ROUND 1
Saturday 18th Feb. 2006.

Peli Pt Pansys vs the Mighty Melville Machines
Peli Pt to Lucky Bay & return.
(is it to be 1 or 2 laps ??).
Briefing on the lawn at Peli Pt. 4:00 pm.
Final course & race details at the briefing.
Race start time 4:30
Can one you yatchies please advise if there should be any no-go zones at that day/time.

ROUND 2.
Sat 25th Feb 2006

The Mighty Melville Machine - fresh from their 1st winning round - challenges the first beach to respond to a 2nd round of competition over the same course. Starting & ending at Melville (Lucky Bay).

NB: WAKSA has been keen to get active 'beach user groups' set up at as many locations as possible. This may be just the vehicle needed to get kiters together at their own locals for a bit of casual get-to-know ur local buddies as well as to interact with kiters from other areas. Gotta be all good I reckon.
If any other kitebeach comes back on the forum to answer the Melville Round 2 challenge they will be accepted as the round 2 victims [}:)]
Otherwise I guess we just have to make it Round 2 - Melville Vs the World.

Sounds like a great starting point already.
Continued planning input welcome from all comers - the more the better.

This was Youngies idea to start with.
Reckon we should call it :
"The WA Ian Young Perpetual Short Course Speed Kiting Challenge"
That way he could just claim his own trophy - every event & every season
And we could commission 'WinDesign' to create a kickarse bronze plaque trophy which he could just leave at home

Seriously though .............
A few locals at Melville today suggested we should change the course for Round 2 such that everyone on the beach can follow the whole race from the comfort of the superb Lucky Bay outlook.
Host beach has the call so it looks like Round 2 may be a little different :-
Upwind towards Pt. Walter then downwind to that dreaded Waylen Pt orange bouy then back upwind to the launch beach
What do you melville crew think of that idea
Maybe we could add a bit of a 'Big Air' spectacular to finish off the day before the sausage sizzle & presentation/s

What ever - No. 1 priority - we have to kick the peli pt butt 1st.

You Melville guys can pick the upwind turn marker - thought you might want it in a bit closer than Nick's "Big Ugly Stick" so that spectators at Lucky Bay get to see a bit of the race?

Either way once you guys have an agreement could Nick or Phil post a detailed map of it's location and maybe a picture of what the marker looks like?

IAN - The google pic & the ugly stick pin is only for options for Melvilles Round 2.
We are suggesting that for Peli Pts Round 1 Melville will install a temporary bouy 75M offshore directly out from; & in line with, Ness Rd. The temporary marker will be flagged with one of the "M" flags Alex made up for Oz Day. It will be 25M out from the permanent 'no kite zone' marker. You could designate either a port or starboard tack; either way kiters will need to run between the two bouys before heading back to Peli. We should be able to make it all perfectly clear at the briefing. It will be very obvious once you get there.

Phil, I have removed my post suggesting the race to go around the Big Ugly Stick. I chose that stick because it is in the middle of the River and gives a good distance to race while keeping out of other kiters way. Let me know if I can help you.

It's friggen hot and no wind Good for the boaties though.

Yea, Phil you got me all day Sat. to set up. I recon we determine the length of the race on the day...and make it longer or shorter depending on wind speed.

Man I do hope that the Seabreeze predictions improve, especailly for Sat.........I actually thought I was going to get out today[}:)] The locals, people who grew up here seem to know without looking on the net....like my wife, good V-day...sweat in bed

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWWWWWWWWWWNNNNNNNNNNN

Did someone mention my name?

Oh yes (after extensive reading) Mr Poor Rellie, we meet again.

I think I'll be leaving my wallet at home Dear Sir as I do believe I'll be riding for the Peli Point Pillagers.

I also feel that the Melville Mincers should bring extra dollars to ferry themselves home with as I doubt any of you really have the ability to get that far back upwind anyhow!

Enjoy that yaaaawwwwwnnnnn while (U think) U can

IAN -
Nick has suggested that we assess the conditions on the day & set the turn around marker to suit. Still thinking about the Ness Rd line but only as close in to the beach as safety allows.
We would all like to see the course set as close into the Melville beach as possible but there is sometimes a little mayhem even beyond the 50M no-kite zone.
We can place a temporary bouy & flag, which will be obvious to all, on very short notice & have the info there for the briefing at 4:00.
Will this be OK

Phil that will be fine - as long as people know exactly where the marker is and it can be seen some distance away then we shouldn't have a problem.

Sorry I didn't answer your question before about one or two laps of the course - I reckon we just do one to start with - but if people want to do a second lap to see if they can improve their time - go for it!

At the end of the day we all have to be flexible when dealing with the wind gods :-) How's the forecasts been this week????? Storms that never happened, NE when it's supposed to be SW, nil wind when it's supposed to be 15-20knots and today there's drizzle that wasn't forecast + it's supposed to be SW and it's NW!!!! WTF is going on??? Lucky we got the wind for the Contacio Wave comp

There's several skiff sailing fleets that are conducting state championship heats on saturday, 2 of which I know start at 4.30pm on Melville water.

I just ask that kiters show respect to these boats in their relatively high level of competition and show the appropriate give way rules, otherwise kiters are gonna get a bad name on the river... not something that I want as I do most of my kiting at melville myself.

Enjoy the race!

Not Wrong
And not just this week - its been all season long
They tell me its all because of Al Ninyo
I just hope that with all these new anti-terrorist laws & powers they can track the barstard down and deport him before he gets a chance to fk-up another season

I've done a lot of yatch racing and there is always a rescue boat. From what I hear there is a strong interest and we're going to have quite a large fleet and there is a chance of some carnage. I personally believe we should be looking for a boat to accompany us in case there is a problem.

Does anybody know somebody with a boat who would be interested to participate as a rescue vessel? Perhap we could each chip in a couple of dollars to help cover their fuel costs and effort.
