SA plans to open Reservoirs for recreational fishing

Fishing in some of SA's most picturesque locations.

On the back of South Australian anglers copping new restrictions off the coast, local councils are floating the idea of opening up Baroota Reservoir at Port Germein, Bundaleer Reservoir near Spalding, the Tod Reservoir near Port Lincoln, Hindmarsh Valley Reservoir near Victor Harbor, and Warren Reservoir at Williamstown for recreational fishing.

The move is to attract anglers, families and tourists to regional SA, according to RecFish SA deputy chairperson Ian Fitzgerald, saying this week:

"All of those reservoirs stocked with recreationally attractive fish would be wonderful opportunities for recreational fishers. They would be very safe for children, very good for families and great for regional economies."

Fish species expected to be stocked in the reservoirs are golden perch, silver perch and trout, popular species for fishing recreationally. First however, the infrastructure around the reservoirs must be improved, with toilets, carparks and boat access still being negotiated. Two of the locations aren’t used for potable water anymore, the Tod and Hindmarsh Valley reservoirs. That means it’s very likely that powerboats will be allowed, with the other locations being reserved for kayak and shore based fishing only.

Exciting news for anglers in SA, where new restrictions are starting this October to protect fish within the new Marine Sanctuary Zones scattered around the state.
