This scary lookin' fish is even scarier than you thought!

And you thought catfish were ugly! Incredible footage has been snapped by some deep sea researchers in the Pacific Ocean of the Angler Fish, also known as a Black Seadevil, or Melanocetus.

While the species is incredible rare to find, and even more rarely filmed at these depths, chances are you’ve seen one of the ugly little critters before. Made famous in the movie ‘Finding Nemo’, the Angler fish is unique in having a light on the end of a movable arm on it’s head.

“Ahhhhhh!” Now you immediately understand which fish we’re talking about, but alas, the picture you’re thinking of in your head (from Finding Nemo) is not quite a perfect rendition of the actual fish.

It’s uglier, but of course fascinating (to say the least). Living at depths around 600m below the surface and only measuring up to 10cm, the Angler Fish is capable of withstanding pressures up to 700psi at those depths. Only the females have the characteristic fishing rod thing, with the tiny little males having the sole job of procreating, and apparently can’t even eat! Male Angler fish are tiny in comparison, less than 1cm long. 

While it’s not the deepest diving, or the most useful of fish species, it certainly is unique. Check out the incredible video of the Angler Fish, swimming happily 600m below the surface in the Pacific.
