SUP shines at Dukes Day, Celebrating 100 years of surfing.

In 1915, Duke Kahanamoku surfed the first waves in Australia at Freshwater, introducing Australia to the sport that would one day become an ingrained part of the nations sporting culture.

Last weekend marked a celebration of 100 years, and stand up paddlers were out in force to represent a new wave of surfing style that will continue for the next 100 years.

Just one look at the dawn ‘Salute to the Sun’ picture reveals how many SUPs were there, from BOP racers to surfers, Stand Up Paddle boards stand tall, silhouetted against the sunrise at Freshwater. Then throughout the day, it was a case of finding those who weren’t stand up paddling, instead of the other way around! The Battle of the paddle event was incredibly popular, with many paddlers choosing to borrow one of the Naish ONE inflatable boards for the event.

There were markets, historic surfboards and Kombi’s in varying states of disrepair, from the downright dilapidated in the carpark, to the pristine ones on show. Stand up paddle boards were on demo, products were on display and custom tee shirts were being printed.
