If anyone is keen to organize any down winders, I'm up for it. Just joined KBV, there starting there members, "Sunday down winders" next month I think.

Well... Hello sailors

I miss Melbourne, what a great bunch of... of... ahh, yeah, well, anyway.

It's great to see that there is some of the "good spirit" left in town since Our departure. Not that I ever doubted the great nature of Melbournites but I was a little worried that, without the oddity of Frankenkite (and his crazy pilot), the "Melb' Kiters Social Sunday" might fade from the calendar. After all, what would We do when We get time to visit

Franky has been hiding in his bag since Our arrival, what with long work hours and lousy winter conditions, but He's itching to get out on the water and scare the locals in WA. I've been out a few times ridding some of the latest kites (please don't tell Him, He'll be horribly jealous), in what can only be described as "not the best conditions", and have had as many great times with some of the WA locals . And now... The seabreezes are coming, and I might just be able to get some time off work to enjoy them.

On a serious note: Keep this going peoples, it's a great thing, and I do (seriously) miss it... and all of you too.

Very interested in doing a downwinder/social kite during the summer.

Also enjoyed kiting sunday. Had session in morning and then another in the afternoon. Bring on the sea breezes.

What time would the downwinder start on Saturday.

Was also thinking of commencing a Melbourne kite drinks one night during the week (wind dependant) - any takers?

Hi All,

A downwinder this weekend would be nice, either day if the wind is going to be right, the forcast for Sunday will be up on BOM tomorrow so we could decide then.
Last year we came up with a few things that helped on the downwinders.
1. Brighton to St Kilda is a good distance without a support boat you can stay quite close to shore the whole way (we did rickets to st kilda once and it was a bit far, though lots of fun – maybe later in the season when we are all a little fitter and the water is a little warmer!)
2. Get into buddy groups of 2 and stay with that person for the entire trip, that way if someone gets into trouble they have someone looking out for them. We tried groups of three but it didn’t really work.
3. Meet at St Kilda first then take some cars to Brighton so there are some in St Kilda to get the cars back

Drinks are always good J

From the first page of the thread here is the list of numbers and names that were interested last year maybe we should update this list – from memory it was John who organised everything and sent out the SMS to say the event was on…

Mmmmmmmmm.....

Sunday
West to southwest wind of 10 to 15 knots tending southerly and freshening to 15
to 20 knots. Waves less than 1 metre.

Looks a bit different to Seabreeze prediction......
Who do you believe

Try for Saturday and see what happens. Saturday might be too blowy

I would believe BOM - Seabreeze (sorry ) doesn't do well for Melbourne… I don’t know where the predictions come from.
To me Sunday looks better for a downwinder, 20-25 knots is getting up there especially if it is gusty and we are out of the protection of the beaches…

Saturday
West to southwesterly wind increasing to 20 to 25 knots during the day before
easing to 15 to 20 knots at night. Waves 1 to 1.5 metres.

Sunday
West to southwest wind of 10 to 15 knots tending southerly and freshening to 15
to 20 knots. Waves less than 1 metre.

"Once a thrill seeker, always a thrill seeker", I say.

It's the source of the nutrients that's the worry.

LAST YEAR WE WENT TO THE PUB AFTERWARDS, BUT SHOULD GET BEERS ORGANISED THIS YEAR.
Will see what weather is like on the day, make the call to cancel at 1 hour B4 the deadline and put it up immediately here after discussing with a few others.
Will group SMS to confirm if on and need SMS back to confirm or we wont wait for you.

Liking the idea of a downwinder, wind may be in the 'a little too much for my kite' range this weekend, but still be happy to get out if the conditions are right! Trying to save my pennies for an SLE/BOW, or what ever you want to call them!

Latest from BOM

Tonight and Saturday
Southerly wind of 15 to 20 knots easing to around 10 knots tonight and tending
southwesterly. Northwest to westerly wind of 10 to 15 knots tomorrow morning,
shifting southwest to southerly at 15 to 20 knots during the afternoon, locally
reaching 25 knots. Waves to 1 metre decreasing to half a metre tonight, then
rising 1 to 1.5 metres during tomorrow afternoon.

Is 15 to 20 knots enough for the downwinder?? I guess we just bring out the big kites?
