I have been noticing lately that attention to colour, and colour co-ordination have become major features when buying a kite. I am hearing of people choosing a different model kite, because it's not the right colour! This is crazy! Is colour really that important? I remeber back in the day when there was only two colours! And it was fluro yellow or fluro pink! How would our metro kiters handle this? Personally I try and choose the uglyest colours I can, or what ever is the first kite I pick up. have even known cases where people are willing to wait for a laster shipment just incase they can get the specific colour they want? and that colour isn't garrenteed either (we don't get the buy kite by colour, we get what were given).

Anyway, just my thought, do you think kiting is becoming even more of a nancy sport of matching socks and neck ties? Do we need a kite float in the mardi gras next month to show off our stunning fashion sence? Or should the industry become like car purchases, custom orders with huge delivery delays? Maybe all kites should come plain white, and you can go down to your local habbadashery and buy some dyes and coloured ribbons and decorate it? Do we need to start getting different colour combo for the board ranges so you can co-ordinate your quiver? ... then harnesses, board bags, wetsuits, ............

JB

Has this diatribe got something to do with your other post:

"We have sent out a temporary patch until we receive the Naish one (which looks a bit sexier). "

You even say that the Naish one is "sexier"

Whats it all about? The kites have a fault, and need fixing, but your fix is daggy yellow. So you are trying to make the poor customers feel guilty if they dont like it ?

We all know the team riders grab the best colors and the customers get the leftovers !

Aboslutely, we always offer a range of colours to our customers, so to satisfy their physiological needs. Such satisfaction will not only boost self esteem and performance as a result, but also create a loving relationship between the two of them

It's a really strange thing ...

It's a bit like cars. Why do people choose the color of a new car?

I quess red cars go faster. I only buy red kites.

I know where Jb is coming from on this!
I think the worst cases I have seen is when the never going to kite Gf comes in with under the thumb intending kiter. I have had some people completely co-ordinate everything, board, harness, vest, helmet, kite, probably budgies too!! ( I only sell black ones)

Some grown men will not fly certain color kites, weird.

JB...those of us from yachtie backgrounds most probably steer away from red, orange, yellow and brown as they have a rep for suffering more UV damage than colours at the other end of the spectrum. Black spinnakers are awesome. For me its just a old UV based habit to buy blue or black.

I can level with Tezza49er. I remeber the Yellow/Green Kites on America True (AC boat in teh 2000 Americas Cup) with the Blue writing they must of had 5 kites blow up and they blamed it on the coloring agent. Blues the go doesn't show too much dirt like white does and doesn't attract heat like black. And no my kit doesn't match, ****ers.

JB, let me see if I understand you. You're saying that if a customer willing to spend 2000 bucks on a kite he's a metrosexual for having a colour preference? WTF?

So you're telling us that you would walk into a surf shop needing some thongs (remember that's only a 15 bucks purchase not 2000) just to find out they only had pink ones, that you would happily buy the pink ones instead putting in the effort of going to the next surf shop to find some in the colour you like???? Yeah right!!!! Do you see the parallels?

What are your true motivations behind this post? Are you not selling enough kites because you can't deliver on colours or having to delay a sale because your "in two weeks" standard response doesn't cut it with customers anymore and they may choose to buy somewhere else? Or are this year's Naish colours that ugly that you're having trouble selling any??? Have you ever heard of the "customer is king"?? Have you noticed that some colours have more appeal than others? So if you have a kite in a more appealing colour it may be easier to resell it later on.

Bottom line is: The customer has the cash and you want to sell him the product. So get your act together and make it work and stop using lame attempts like this one to try to make your job easier. It's time to pull your fingers out of your arse and deliver some true customer service.

P.S.: Are you originally from WA? Your spelling is shocking!!

its freaking thursday night and i'm bored so here goes...

Variety - so that it doesnt look like a military operation down at your favourite beach...all uniform and ****

Value for money - the consumers pay so much for the kite so they better get to choose what colour at least. And if its so costly, it had better look good. Who wants to pay 2k for a flying joke?

freedom of choice - if the kite company designs a kite that looks like ****, thats their prb, no reason why the consumer should put up with it. Though I do agree that swapping brands just because of colour is a little extreme, but consumers get to choose what they wanna spend their money on.

Resale value - if the kite comes in a "nice" colour, it'll be easier for the owner to sell it off....

some opt for performance, some opt for looks.... maybe for the average kiter who cant look good riding want to at least look good on the beach! LOL..

At the end of the day, a kite's still a kite, a nicer colour wont make you ride any better

Goose, Wow what an attack. Thats a bit cranky for a friday morning! There was actually no motivation behind it, just wondering why it has become more and more important what colour your kite is. Some people that can't find the right colour thongs are going off and buying gumboots! sales are good actually, but thats beside the point. I am not bagging people for having a colour preferance, just supprised at the level people will go to if they can not get the colour they want. Do you have some kind of a grudge or something either against me or Naish?

Tezza, Despite sun failure, in general blacks and darker colour of Nylon are in many cases of a poorer quality than whites, yellow, red and lighter colours. but yes the sun does tend to visually eat them more. (I used to be a sailmaker for North sails)

Bottom line, yes the customer has the cash! and it's up to them. I have just noticed a much bigger concern with colours this season as opposed to previous! Maybe colour is more important than performance this year?

Anyway, not trying to get anyone narky, just relax. Opinions are good, not worth getting all worked up about!

If anything I have said can be taken two ways, I mean the way that doesn't offend anyone! I comb my hair too!

Buying new is for total suckers. I always score the previous years gear for 1/4 of its new value. This means you dont have a choice in colour.

Also, when did caring about looking good, and possibly being a bit metro, mean you were into guys? Being a a well dressed dude just makes it easier to pick up mad hood rats.

JB, what did you expect with a post like this? Come on. You were clearly making fun of people that like choosing colours. Stirring and calling them metro didn't do you any favours.

If you want to play with the big boys and give sh1t to others you need to be able to take some too!!!

Just a thought

As said by Rawlinson Rivera about skating:

"Skating is all about looking good, you can only skate as good as you look"

Pretty easy to apply yo kiting aswell (and all other extremesports for that matter)

The reason people want to choose colors is to personalize themselves I guess. And the reason why it's becoming more and more "important" is because we can now actually choose from a HUGE amount of different kites, all very well made and with great performance, in all the colors and design you can think of. It's just gonna get more and more. You can compare it with any other "extremesport". Skiing, Snowboarding, Skating, Skating (inlines), Wakeboarding, and so on.. There is a WIDE array of different designs and styles to choose from.

So ****ing sick of this lame ass attitude that you're not allowed to buy stuff or dress on the beach/in the water to look good. I mean come on!! It's the most ****ing basic human thing there is! It's rooted in our nature to compete about women for survival. That's been going on since the first human walked and it's not gonna change even though today we don't go and strike eachother down with clubs (some do)

In conclusion, let people buy and wear whatever they want. As long as it makes them feel good that's all that matters, right? What do you care anyway? Jealous?

If you are going out you put on some nice clothes right? to look good? why? IT'S THE SAME THING! You wouldn't put on a pink tee, red pants and a rainbow colored tyedye shirt ontop of that would you (and one of those hats with a yellow propeller on the top)? So then why aren't we allowed to "match" our cars, kites, furniture, gardens, or whatever the same way?

You have a really good point there, but JB will argue that shorts are ok, as long as you don't want to select the colour

Goose, what colour is your kite BTW? Seem to be gettin a little defensive.

I am not against any colours, or preferences. I just think it is weird that some people will change products purely on colour. Nothing to do with brands, workload or anything else that has come up. And the fact that it seems to be a lot more present now days as opposed to 2 years ago or earlier.

JB,
You know what’s my point, we’ve discussed this often enough… All white and life made easy… or rather all pink to please Rall Inn…
Actually, I tried to gently bring this question up on a recent intellectual topic called “who’s a tea pot”, but all it got me was a lineup, and according that lately, each time I put a post, my list of off-work duties gets longer (and I still want a bit of time to kite between two other fun stuffs…), I’d be better off keeping quiet!… But I do agree with you…
I did ask what colours were “cool” but nobody answered me… (would have loved to get educated, being a self-proclaimed very uncool person!)
Pink rocks or pink sucks, red and green is disgusting or super cool, well, at the end of the day, should this really be MORE IMPORTANT than the kite’s performance???
I do not disagree that when a customer pays 2000$ for a new kite, it should be part of customer service… Definitely.
But on the other hand, I agree that this year, it sort of felt like the fashion side was taking over the technical aspect, and, yes, it gets me wondering…
If someone was to come up with a super cool looking kite (no idea what that would be… somebody help me, my sense of fashion is disastrous!), would people buy it even if it flew like a penguin???
Oh, and just anticipating the bites here, guys, JB and I disagree very often and we’re happy to disagree, it gives wider perspectives… But I do agree with him on this one, and I find sort of bizarre that an extreme sport seems to be turning into a fashion event…
If colours have become so bloody important, well, then it would be good for us to know which ones are the “good” ones, so we can satisfy the customers properly!
But from a very private perspective, it still gets me wondering where have all the REAL Men gone…

i think the fashion side of the sport has nothing to do with kite colour. Noticed how many people are on surfboards lately? Sure its fun, and better for waves, but you cant deny that many of the people on surfboards are on them because its the latest thing...

i reakon skimboards will be the next big thing
