Scotty mac you are responsible for all this small board sub malaka and you know it
Lacey sounds like you have a nice board there for sure, I am thinking my boards would be way thicker for my fat **s ,but horses for courses I guess. I would probably struggle on yours

I dont think 8ft - 9ft boards are short , but i dont know why you would want to go shorter than that unless you are light or a kid.You cant honestly tell me you need a paddle to turn a 6 or 7 ft board , i may be a gumby but i think i could even manage that.

i think you have a valid point there, but part of the appeal is the paddling part for sure
cheers

Got an 8'8" coming next week or two I shaped for riding in more powerful waves. Had a sick trip to the west coast a couple of weeks ago and went stand up on the smallest day and loved it but my 8'3" fish was a bit interesting.... Late takeoffs on little heavy sucking sections felt like dropping down a few steps of a set of stairs but it was lots of fun. The 8'8" is a pin tail quad which should be sweet.

Yer I noticed that. I tend to try and shape up everybody elses good ideas in to what I think may work, which is the best you can do when your only shaping part time, one board every few months, as against full time set ups etc.

So far its been good fun, shaped 4 in total. The pin tail should work well because I am into narrow tail boards. I am not finding it so easy to get use to moving my back foot around so narrow works for me. I couldnt really fault the 8'3" I am riding for small waves (except like DJ said, the nose could look nicer if it was a bit thinner).

If the 8'8" works its fully covered for me. Later in the year might try and stretch budget for a racing board but we will see

If there is no machismo/ego involved in riding shorter sup boards or if it has nothing to do with fashion and it's all about fulfilling our own personal happiness - why do many of you shorter board addicts have the incessant need to tell everyone in almost every post the exact dimensions of your shorter boards?

Oh dear, why is it I feel another caning coming my way.....

Oilli,
Why would you be? You might as good or if not better than me, if not, what is that got to do with the price of eggs? It's a challenge thing to ride smaller boards, and certainly should not to be seen as bragging rites

Your could ride shorter but its your choose not too and that's fine. I think most people under-estimate their ability to go shorter but then that's how I enjoy to ride and that's it in a nutshell. In saying that, if your not interested. So be it.

Even Blane gave it to me once for pushing the short boards. That's cool.

All Good.

Hey Piros. How does the 8'8 differ to the 9'1 that you had? Is it a newer House shape?

The 2 boards are extremely different the 8-8 is more a fish the 9-1 looks like a short board. I am actually more stable on the 8-8 and I catch waves easier on it as well.I was just too heavy for the 9-1 and with it's pulled in nose and tail it made life hardwork.

The 8-8 was Ron Houses own board he brought it over with a 8-5 at the this years malfunction. These boards are nothing like his stock range.

Oliver I hear what you saying and untill I got on the 8-8 I would have agreed with you , but now my vote is get your saw out and cut a foot off.[}:)]

Go the shorties.

A question for those of you getting on the smaller boards (9' or so and under).

I've noticed some peeps on the forum who were/are/have been talking of going smaller/shorter to prove their manhood, or how much better they can now rip on a waves now that they have a 7'6" .....whatever - are now considering buying bigger boards named "guns" to ride the "big waves" or just take the glide on small bumps. The sport/activity in the year I've been watching it is going full circle.

Currently, owning a sup is a reasonably expensive hobby and is fashionable for many of us "older" watermen: fashions change quickly. IMHO forget all the bull**** and go whats going to work best for you and the conditions you find yourself most often in. It's quite obvious a smaller board is going to be:

a: less stable
b. offer less glide
c. make it harder for you to start early on a wave.
d. make you feel better when you are lined up next to someone on an ocean liner, unless the board you own happens to be called a "gun"

I was thinking about going smaller for the balance thing and partly because of the hype about going small. I went out one day with some others and came to a realization that it's actually cooler to be stable and catch waves on a bigger board than to fall off randomly on a board that's too small for your ability/weight.

Where can I buy a gun?

Hey Oliver - I could not agree with you more. I really wonder sometimes how many of the people riding v/short sups are actually enjoying it and how many are pretending to enjoy it to justify their outlay of cash and being able to continue to post forum articles telling everybody just how small their board is and how much they are apparently ripping.
Picture any surf break in modern times with guys on shortboards way too small for them or the conditions bleeting and whining about the bigger boards and mals catching all the waves and they will sit there in water up to their ears having a ****t time and blame everyone but themselves while everyone else has a fat time. Well now the ex shortboarders who are so focussed on getting these sub 9 and even sub 8ft sups will in time be faced with that old dilemna of sitting around whinging and bitching about all the guys on real sized sups that are having fun and getting heaps of waves, even on the tiny days and are just having a blast and enjoying every cent they have invested in their beautiful sup board. Hell you guys are already starting to look like shortboarders paddling your asses off in small waves and just generally being a bloody nuisance by having to surf in the lineup with all the other prone surfboards cos your baby sup just dont work out there in the smaller fatter waves or off the shoulder away from the crowd. Yeah yeah I know everybody is entitled to ride whatever they want to and I have no issue with that but I honestly believe too much pressure is being placed on newbies to go on to sups that are way too small for them or the conditions they really surf/paddle. The old line that is constantly being used in these forums is "go shorter, you will find it difficult at first but get used to it quickly" (or similar words) is complete and utter bull###t. I believe we should be encouraging newbies to "go long, learn how to handle and surf your big board and concentrate on having fun and catching loads of waves and enjoy those tiny days when you normally wouldn't be able to surf and just chill out and soak up all that is stand up paddling". Hey at the end of the day I don't really give a rats what you ride or where you ride it - but I do miss seeing people out laughing and having fun and catching little waves and taking the pisss outta each other like when I started supping last year. Isn't it great though that the good old days for most of us suppers was only last year !!

Yeh your right, I have no fun at all on a shorter sup, I would much prefer to be riding a massive tank out on the shoulder going straight cos my board doesn't turn. The good thing about new guys learning to ride long sups is when they try and take a wave early, don't make it and then clean everyone up in the line up. What are you guys stressing so much about what length sups any one is riding, don't be afraid of change, it's actually fun to try new things. Don't forget 'short and thick does the trick! I loved em at first, but now I'm over it. Seen so many old guys doing it now it's boring, they don't give a good perspective of what's actually going on. The best vids I've seen in recent weeks are those shot without the strange fish eye effect - piros's last vid comes to mind (awsome) and the last couple of hot vids by Keahi in noosa? That's what I want to see more of.

Don't get me wrong.... I think they (go pro vids) are great for improving your personal performance, home movies etc, but for me as joe public having to click a link and watch another old guy doing their thing - no thanks.
