Hey Oliver - has just occurred to me why all these "short board suppers" are all going for shorter paddles now. I had always thought that it had something to do with the fact that they needed the paddle shorter to allow for a shorter/quicker more powerful stroke BUT NO I have worked out that these experts spend so much time patting themselves on the back that their arms have stretched and as such only require a much shorter paddle.
I hesitate in saying this but here goes - I am sure that you ex shortboarders would be in much less of a hurry to step down to the sub 9ish sups if you actually knew how to surf a longer sup. If you had actually had some experiance on a mal and knew how to surf one then you would probably still be enjoying your bigger sups because you would be able to surf one properly. **** if I had a dollar for every ex shortboarder turned supper who said "these big sups are crap - they don't turn" I'd be a friggin rich man by now. Don't turn my hairy ##se - all sups turn !! It aint the board guys - its the person standing on it !! And just out of curiousity - now that you super short supers are ripping and tearing and carving it up so well why aren't you out surfing the "shortboard" breaks where you can really show off your natural god given talents - haven't seen too many of you out at D'bah/snapper/burleigh/south straddie etc ?????? whats the story with that - it would certainly be better suited to your skills and equipment and free up the tame little pussy breaks for us average punters who are just out there for a bit of fun and arent worrying about who's watching us.

wow, this topic is going all ways. I though i better put in mine. lol. i ride a 9'2 PSH with a new one on order. I love the ability to surf it like a short board off the tail but get to the nose and get some tip time. For me being an ex long boarder i love th all round ability. BUT my eyes have opened up and i have found a new passion, i currently have in my hands a 12 foot gun from PSH and OMG. This board rocks, to surf some thing that you have to think about is such a buzz. Going rail to rail with so much speed, pulling some sick carves as well as a kunky 360 is such a blast. To every one going smaller try and get a big board in your quiver, you wont regret it as it will always help your smaller board surfing...

Hahaha I reckon all you guys on the longer SUP's should go in Comp's if they "Turn so good and it's not the board it's the Surfer"

You must be blind if you haven't seen SUP's out at D'Bah, Snapper, Burleigh and South Straddie because I know I surfed all those spots on my SUP

i would love to surf one in a comp, but i agree in a comp they want to see more radical moves. But to go out free surf and pull some epic lines is a buzz in its self. It whats the sport is about its the buzz.

Well, what do you say after billboards comments Well billboard may be a little surprised as I agree with some of his comments, If ,like me, coming from a longboarding background. Any sup under 10 foot is a shortboard sup IMHO.I longboard snapper and d-bah often and don't see too many super's out. On the other hand I see guy's such as Jacko and gang rip the crap out of any and everything on sub 10 footers. Each to their own I say, Short or Long, the winners are the ones with biggest smile on the deal One thing that Billboard said which is true, the art of riding a longboard will change mind sets,I ride my 10.6 sup the same as my 9.4 longboard.

Please don't shoot me guy's,just MO

Oliver its time to unleash that 1000 post or did I miss it.

I really don't want to get into a long/short board debate-there's no winners in being divisive.

Mac don't you think that's because your 106 SUB is about as loose and manoeuvrable as your 904 longboard-I've found the PSH SUBs to in the shorter ranges to be pretty loose compared to 'most' longboards.

If you racing, you want a longer one. If you surfing you want a shorter one. If you end up with one in between, you just hate it because you sort of want a longer one and a shorter one and keep your in between. Then to top it off, your favorite forum has personnel videos of dudes having heaps of fun with short and long ones and that makes your real angry. How sad, owe well, lets talk about short ones again......

After 18 months of lbeing a visitor to this forum I would have to say this has been the most entertaining thread so far!!! and I just had to register....

I have just gone from an 11 footer to a ten footer. I cannot see me using the 11 again. Hopefully I will make a nine footer in the next few months. The manouvreability of boards as they get shorter allows us to hit lips, do reentries etc. ! But... the length still lets us do the mal moves - walking the board etc.
The sharing of board dimension is the purpose of a forum and the shorter boards appearing at PRK are ridden by shapers that rip.
Our sport is going thru a significant change in design s with the long race/downwinders and the shorter wave boards. Enjoy it!

PS saw two whales at PRK the other day

Well being new to this I'll give you my two cents for what its worth. Doesn't matter what size SUP you ride as long as your having fun....isn't that what its all about. I started out over 40 years ago on a short twinnie, then thrusters of various lengths to 7'4, then longboards - performance and traditional - 8'6 to 10'. Enjoyed all aspects and over the past few years have really enjoyed riding a 9'9 22 lb single fin.

I don't hold any disregard for whatever type of board we all ride - I stiil love to watch the pro circuit comps.

I am fascinated by by all aspects of SUP and get stoked reading the posts of guys SUPing the shorter boards. As for the technical details of these boards - great stuff.

Point is what a bland a dull life surfing would be if we all followed the head ewe in a flock of sheep. Guys, we are all individuals and should respect each others journey in life and what it means to us all.

i'll toss a live one in there - who said sups had to be longer in the first place. lets face it, most guy's going on about longer sups are unfit or are older, not that there is anything wrong with that.

love reading this forum and thought i might try and proove my manhood. I learnt on a 7'9 by 29 wide late last year and push 95 kg. bloody hard for about 3 days and now its like second nature. Boards this size fit in the pocket of small waves without that clumbsy feeling of a 9 10 or 11 footer. Ride what you want but if you tanker riders havent tried a short board then you comments dont really count

have to say this , look at the topic. concept might be one of the new school going straight to shorter sups, most of us started longer for what ever reasons, but dropped down asap which you will find is what 90% of sup-ers do

I'm thinking that if I lived in a city by the surf, and I could surf every day or so, and I was really good at it, then I'd probably have a short board as well.

As it is, I drive for an hour to the surf and take one board that has to handle anything that I find when I arrive so I'm happy enough on my 11'2".

Since SUPping my wave count has gone up to a stage where I'm getting a little bored just trimming and riding but I'm hardly using the capability of my board yet so there's no need to trade for something more nimble just yet.

The only way I would go to a dedicated SUP short board would be if I could have a dedicated flat water cruiser as well. Given that I have four kiteboards, a SUP and a 7'3" prone surfboard (and a mountain bike and two paragliders and a GF and a bunch of keyboards and guitars and ... ) I'm thinking that's not likely to happen real soon.

I hear what your saying. However if I choose to ride an 11'er that's my stoke. Maybe someday I will drop down shorter...my partner has a 9'6...but I'm not going to do it just coz some people think you not a good SUPer coz you ride a tanker. Generalising people as 'unfit or older' coz they ride 'tankers" is bulls--t. As I said earlier I "don't follow the head ewe", I do want I enjoy. I like walking the board, hanging five, ten whatever and whoever said you can't fit a longboard into a small wave. We all need to keep an open mind.
