after having a great day yesterday watching and having a couple of surfs at the roar comp,i trotted down to our short board riders club comp and watched a couple of heats. after watching some of them, i don't think anyone is surfing fast enough from rail to rail and through turns on sups yet. don't get me wrong, all the guys in the final all surfed great.i think jacko is probably the quickest turner on his naish 8'x 26" or whatever it is. it will be interesting to see where he goes. unfortunately, its too small in volume for most of us. kieran was on a 8'6 x 28 woody jack and he has that wired for fast turns. so what the answer-sub 9' narrower boards that will do quicker rail to rail transitions, but somehow still have some sort of stability?

no, i'm talking about the 8' version of the 8'10. i have seen the 7'9'' it looks insane when you stand over the top of it and no, i haven't tried it. it's the opposite to that i'm talking about- fast carving rail to rail turns

Hey Lacey, you will never turn a big volume craft like a SUP as quick as a shortie.

The lines SUPs draw are unique in their own way and the speed they generate in crappy surf is amazing - I reckon.

You're right about Jacko and that 8 footer- but not many have the balance of a tightrope walker like him

Turns are supposed to be fluid and controlled and not "quick". Good turns come from being in the right place on the board when the turn is executed and having your body and board in sync'. The best 'turners' I have seen on sups in this country are guys like Lummers/Casso/Tullyst John/Woogie Marsh/Jamie Mitchell - they all sup and surf with finesse and really make beautiful rail to rail transitions and as such are able to maintain good momentum on the wave and make it look effortless. Too many guys are trying to surf their sups like shortboards and are too lazy or incompetent to move their feet and as such are trying to muscle the board around and not work with the board to achieve more flowing/controlled and powerful moves.

I fully agree Laceys, there's a long way to go on design. People already want to surf past the current boards. People who ride shortboards when its good and SUP when marginal still want to surf the same.

The big 'floaters' are perfect for the poo squat paddlers in the creek but in the surf there's miles to go. It is so exciting!

Hey Lacey,
I'm 47 years old - the rail to rail transitions aren't
going to get any faster from here!
That's why I'm riding a SUP !

From what I saw yesterday there were guys who were surfing rail to rail (even on those waves). Kieren and Billy were the standouts, which is why they were #1 and #2 I suppose. Jacko had it wired earlier but as the wave got fatter it was harder for him on his board (10/10 for having a go though). Also, Dogman was pretty impressive and did some pretty big rail carves.

I think that by next year's comp you will see full rail surfing by a lot more surfers.

I agree with both of you that there is a long way to go with SUP design, but there is no way you will ever get a 100 liter + SUP to turn as quick as a razor thin short board. Compare high performance Mal riding to high performance short board in terms of speed of carving and lip based manoeuvres - no comparison.

Jamie Willems was also surfing rail to rail in his early heats, especially on his forehand (left). He ran out of steam (and waves) in the end but fully deserved being in the final. He ripped on that red McTavish.

Many other guys and girls ripped, too...

hi, i just would like to say, my comments are about the boards them selfs and in no way is a reflection on the awesome surfing that when down."billy watson" is the best that i have seen in my opinion. he was right in it and very capable of getting that score he needed, but the wave didn't come. i would be happy to be a 1/4 as good as him and i'm NOT putting myself as some kind of gun sup er. it was purely an observation after watching a short board club comp only. also, its not a downer on shaper's, things have gone crazy even in just a year. i was just hoping for a forum on a few design ideas.
i think it's exiting times and who knows what will be surfed and the level of surfing in next years comp
cheers

I have been an avid "watcher" of this forum for quite a while and I need to make a comment and do not wish for it to sound derogitory (think thats right) but - from what I have seen you seem to go through about 5 boards a week and when you seem to have that special board you show it a week later with the fins changed or the shape altered or some other seemingly pointless alteration made to the board ! Are you just unlucky enough to be buying crap boards or are you just very very very very fussy. Please excuse my comments if you are a shaper or something and have justifiable reason to make the constant changes to the boards cos I guess then you would know what you were doing and saying. Otherwise maybe you shouldn't be advising what is wrong with boards and you should actually get yourself a decent board and ride it for more than five minutes and you will find that most good modern shapes actually do turn and surf really well.

Hey Lacey,I reckon you should keep trying different setups with the boards, that's how the sport will progress,I'd be doing the same if it wasn't for my limited water time and ability[not knowing what's works and what doesn't],
and nothing wrong with five boards a week,I've just ordered no.6 for the year so I don't feel so guilty,

well done supple, way to put the nail in the coffin....
If any one was helping with the evolution of board design on the gold coast, it was going to be lacey.
Constant testing, refining and feedback to your shaper is how you advance your equipment. inturn helps the shaper make Joe average a functional shape.
Keep riding your current pop out. And wait for someone from an overseas company to tell what you should be ridding in another 12 months.
Tall poppie syndrome strickes again.

lovin this topic

yer the boards are getting better thats for sure

jackos 8'0 weapon is for sure the fastest board rail to rail but its outta reach for the average beer swilling pie eatin machine like myself and other larger than life itself mutant individuals

cant wait to see what people come up with next

combinations of widths verus length and girth will be the factor

then when you think you have got it right

throw in the fin shape size position and multiple combinations

bring it on

after a short w@nk rave with lacey at the roar comp the other day while drinking beer and eating snags

im lovin his attitude of buy try sell buy try trade burn try bury try resurrect try rebuild try rebirth try a bit of this try a bit of that slap it together and bobs your uncle but that was crap lets try it again like with a bit of this and that and **** i dont like that either what about.....and so on.....and so on............

cant wait to see what he has in a years time after another 60 boards or so per week

at least some shapers out there are getting more practice or RSI or a few bucks towards their retirement home accomadation bills

rock on

I'm interested to see what comes out next and which brand is on the money.

I haven't ridden that many different boards (maybe 13 to 15) and all of them were good
for some reason. Some fast, some really loose, some skatey, some terrible. Who will be
able to put it all together and when is what I'm excited about.

You never know, I have a couple ideas that just might work! I will need to work on my
shotty glass jobs though.
