I saw a local kiter bounce around the sandhills (with his kite) for about ten minutes on Monday. It was really windy. That was BEFORE he made it to the water. I've never done THAT on my windsurfer. Somehow....I don't really want to do that either

Blah blah blah
With the starting of this thread I dont think you are helping the kiting community
But this is a public forum isnt it?
Its a windsurfing forum is it not?
Posting crap like that here is bound to get negative vibes.
Hardie made one of the best posts ive ever read
Looks like he waisted 23 years of his life? Shame on him
Kiting is new and easier to learn than windsurfing therefore its more appealing and more people take it up.
Just like boogie boarding... Its easier than surfing so more people take it up.
Another factor I think is the cost. Ive been windsurfing for 3 1/2 years and have roughly spent about 8 g's on the gear.
Can a little boy find that kinda cash?

My speedsailing adrenalin soaked spinalcord a figment of my puny imagination........ My enduring windsurfing friendships just shadows in the breeze...... My lifestyle a delirious ecstacy of myths and lies....... A daughter born of a windsurfing marriage ...... Oh if only you could have enlightened me earlier...... my life could have been so much.......ummm..........ummm........ impoverished?

That you are so insecure that you need to put someone else's passion down says much about your age and mental state, if you are young it is understandable and forgivable, and it gave me a chance to access my beautiful memories....... I thank you for that....... 23 years of joy!!!!!

As for Kiting........ Cool sport!!!!! No need to put it down for me to feel good about windsurfing....... windsurfing just is, you either get it, or you don't, no need to justify it, no need for conversions!!!!!

Enjoy your kiting...... You only create negativity in your own mind, which does you no good,....... you may delude yourself you are stirring up the pot, but you have just used up negative energy in your mind to create negative energy in your soul (It is not in the spirit of Kiting either, therefore you become a spiritual fraud)...... What do you think is happening to your neural pathways and neurotransmitters when you do this stuff.... You are basically poisoning your mind.....

.....Thanx also for giving me a chance to do a little bit of education about negative thinking (BTW if I have to spell it out forya "It's bad for human beings"),...... , you have helped make my day!!!!!

Just so we all can read it again.

All of what you all say is so true.
If you are a surfer, polehuger, or teabagger, or snowboarer, or whatever, doesn't matter, you are in the ZONE when you are doing it.How do you explain the ZONE to anyone????
Surely we all feel that way bout our "fav" sport. And there is no way you can explain it to someone who hasn;t been there. There is enought water, land etc for everyone, .Healthy competitiveness is also great, hey , it is the Australian Way .

You've got to admit, it would take a fair bit of effort for a windsurfer to black out an entire town

hummm cpthing, hope u read this one,

I believe that technically (mark my words), kitesurfing is better than windsurfing because it allows you to plane earlier, theres not much to carry, its a lot easier to learn and you enjoy it fast and stuff...
SO, its all about EASY... alright, EASY, what most people look for, easy fun, no hassle.

BUT, windsurfing is REWARDING, I windsurfed for about 4 years then took up kitesurfing, and got better at kitesurfing in a few months that i was at windsurfing. THEN, the kiting equipment was so fragile and lost its value so fast that I thought well this is good fun but I dont wanna renew my gear all the time etc... Plus, I felt like I wasnt doing as much exercise.

Then i took windsurfing back with some cheap old equipment that still did the job (old being still performant and strong 2000 wave gear), and im much happier with that now... the sensation on the water is different and I enjoy both.

Windsurfing makes you body work much more, the fact that it may need more wind may be frustrating, but this frustration will make the next good session soooo much better, and each new move that you can do feels sweeter than it had in kitesurfing.

Maybe you have to do both to understand, then decide what you're into.

Well done X man, I don't quite agree with the low wind thing , the other day kites were dropping out of the sky but I could keep going untill the next gust hit so I was planning a lot more than the kites. And I wasn't bobbing up and down in the water swearing at my kite the wind and everything else

WELL x-man, thanks for your point of view

You do sound like you have thought both sports through. Although you may not understand that there are many variables within the sport of kiting.
If you want to cruise you hook in to the depower and use your own body weight to handle the power of the kite, and ride a buoyant board.
If you are an aggressive sports person you can unhook from the depower loop and ride the kite at a set power. You can ride freestyle or surf in this fashion.

I've see guys in Sydney riding one kite in all wind conditions and surfboards with no straps.(I've seen this in 30+knots and they were ripping in the waves)
AS far as your idea of the quick learning curve of kiting V windsurfing you are totally correct. The one point that i will make is that the curve is continuous and the learning process is infinite. I think it's advantageous to try new tricks, ride unhooked, in the surf or on a lake.
Maybe where you ride/rode there was not a progressive enough group of peers. I find when I go to Sydney I am inspired by the amazing kilters and the potential of this sport.
As far as me trying windsurfing, I did it for probably more years than a lot of the guys on this forum. I broke equipment all the time and it got expensive having a forest of snapped carbon masts in the yard.

CptCrutch

Owning a windsurfer or strapping it to the roof of your car does not constitute windsurfing.
I also find when I want to learn a few more kite tricks I go round to my grandma's house and watch her dunking her tea bag in and out of the cup... very old school

Next up I'm guessing you are going to bag on about the benefits and prowess of kite looping over forward, back or push looping a windsurfer.
It's guys like you that give our sport (kite surfing) a bad rap. So do you wear your bike pants or boardies over your wetsuit when kiting ?

As an advocate of both forms I don't see the need to promote one over the other... each to their own and the joys of each sport.

My own personal opinion is that if wind and waves are involved, I'll take the windsurfer over the kite hands down every time. I guess this is because I come from a surfing background and find that wave sailing provides a feeling/sensation closer to surfing than kiting. That said you don't see me ramming it down peoples throats or unleashing a flame war by posting a fairly offensive thread on a windsurfer forum.... and then attempting to take the moral high ground.

I'm guessing you ride a twin tip...

CptCrunch WTF!! does everybody realise that u cant kite in canberra!!?!?!?!?! its to gusty they just fall out of the sky or end up in the reeds!! they are a joke! we get westerlys that i get down to a 4.5/85litre and easterlys 3 times a week in summer at 20knots they hit the lake at 5pm after work. they are the most fun ever and u dont have to drive 2.5 hrs to broulee to sail, lake burly griffen rocks and poleboarders have it all to ourselves.. midweek at 8pm im doin my flakas n forwards and my old man is hitting 35knots on slalom kit, while act kiters have their gear packed into a neat little bag in the back of their daewoo matiz..

CptCrunch
untill u come down to bluegum point, next time it hits 15 knots and show me up (im the kid in the ute with 5 boards hangin proudly out the back) i think u should take your easy carry kitebag and shove it up yo *some text missing*
