Not to get us off topic but how are the quests vs the v2 rockets?

720s is such a beauty...

Hopefully testing the 2.4m LTX Thursday. 2nd session on the 3.1m LTX at the least.

Heard back from PPC on the low end for the 2.7m:

"The low end on the 2.7m is around 25 knots, depending on your foil & weight, and the 2m is around 28 knots."

The low end change from 3.5. at 12 knots to 2.7m at 25 knots is a pretty big leap, they definitely seem sized to bridge your quiver there. I think if I pull the trigger I'd lean towards the 3.5m at the moment. I'm pushing pretty hard on smaller foils and boards and snatching up a tiny double skin might not be the right call.

I was honestly hoping the 2.7 would be my perfect sail and cover 20-40 knots. That would see use almost every day for me and then I could have something tiny in reserve for 40+

I like them both, though I wish the Quest had the Ozone lines. I think the quests have the edge on range but only just, and a slightly better low end, but again not by much. I think the ozone are a touch more stable. I love the f one bar. The ozone are faster and turning is about the same. I also cant stop feeling that for my conditions I sold my power packs too soon.

But always looking for a new toy, if its an improvement. If I can get to a 3 PW quiver, where theres a big range overlap, good lines/stashing and upwind that eould be great.

Good rundown and comparison Mike. I kind of wonder if the LTX will be what you are looking for, especially if you liked the power packs. I should get a big day on those tomorrow and will have more info afterwards.

I’m finding the stated wind ranges for the orbit a bit odd. The 3.5 will get you going in 12 knots but the 2.7 needs 25 knots minimum? A 13 knot difference?? Also the 4.5 gets going in 10 knots ? I don’t think a 4.5m of any kind of sail, kite, wing or parawing will get me going in 10 knots. I guess we just need to wait a bit to see how it all plays out.

In my conditions (Port Phillip Bay), if I’m on a smaller para, I’m also on a smaller foil.

To be credible for me, the low end for the 2.7 should be what it takes to get up on a small foil ( in my case 570 UHA), and the low end for the 4.5 would be what it takes to get me up on something big (970). The 3.5, somewhere in between (for me, 770 or 670).

If I’m down on the ocean, there may be big bumps but light wind, so I’ll have a big para with a small foil, but never the other way around.

Actually about a month ago I was out in 30-45 knots on my spitfire 1180 ( 1180 span 1500cm2) that’is my biggest foil. We had the biggest storm we’ve had in a few years in Perth we were on the swan river though so there’s almost no fetch. Downwind only in that wind. Barely able to control my 3m pt skin long enough to get it tucked away but once I did it was a fun surfy run. The big foil was the right size for the still quite slow bumps on the river.



We get plenty of days in Perth winter where the wind is strong and gusty but not a good direction to create bigger bumps so a big foil small para is the best setup.


Anyway thats totally beside the point. It would be great if there was a standard measurement for wind ranges like they have for car mileage but I don’t see that happening anytime soon. A brands stated wind range should be taken as a rough guesstimate only.


What I’m really interested in finding out is can a double skin with the PAL to increase camber create more low end grunt than a single skin? I think there’s a chance that it could. If you take a good solid clean airfoil from the double skin, perhaps there will be very little flutter and it may stay more solid in pumping, then you increase the camber to give it as much low end grunt as possible maybe it does create more power than a single skin. A single skin is more like a parachute using more raw grunt whereas the double skin would be more like a wing creating lift.


It’s an interesting question. I guess we will know the answer for sure in the next couple of months.

I think this is a great question. I wonder if there's a canopy relationship related to the size that can also justify significant low end gains for 3.5 and larger, but when you reach the 2.7 and smaller realm the benefits are harder to capture?

Wind range updated on their site. If these numbers become reality for a neutral buoyancy midlength and 850ish foil that would be insane. My guess is that low end will need +10 knots for my kit but top end will be higher and I hope upwind speed/angles/comfort will be unmatched.

I can get up on a single skin 3.6 in 12 knots but it really needs to be 15 to get good angles and then it is maxed out at 17 or 18 knots. Yesterday I rode my 2.4m in what i think was 18 to 24 and it was perfectly powered. Could I get a 2.7m PPC for 15 and up and only need a 4.3 single skin for 10 to 15 knots? It all sounds too good to be true but I will be first in line if someone confirms if it all is true.

Feck what weight are you, what board and foil do you use to get a 3.6 going in 12 knots?? I cannot get a 5m going in 12 knots 95kg, 6 x 105l board 1010 foil.

I am 65kg so that helps. I am on a 75l army mid which is ok but it does have some very annoying features in light wind starts. I can probably get up on a 3m in 13 knots but just not as reliably as a 3.6m. Light wind foil is Orca 800. For reference my 90kg mate is always one PW size and one foil size bigger, same brands. His board is similarly sized to mine. Now with the PR v2's in light wind (12 to 15) we both have gone up a size due to a little more top end in these new ones and easier to stash. Always sizing the biggest i think i can hold down which is of course opposite to how we sized wings and kites.

I also get more practice than most. 😀

I can't imagine getting up that light with a parawing!

Fully geared up and wet I've got to be a solid 90kg. Foil options are Code 720s or Florence 110x matched with a board in the 60-70l range. I've obviously made my bed and have to lie in it with my kit being a lot less forgiving this year.

What I will say, is that I'm really excited about how small I can rig with new parawings and still be able to enjoy myself once up on the water. In the past I would have needed so much juice to get up that I would have been maxed out quickly. Now though, these new parawings (BRM S3, 777 LTX) with so much more range are making life really easy on foil. That's what I'm wanting from the Orbit. The low end grunt to legitimately get me up and going with small gear but then still plenty of room to roam on the top end. I don't know if our kits will ever get as small as kitefoiling but it does feel like the option for smaller boards and foils has very much arrived.

Shop reviews are tough, it will be more telling if Hydrocraft starts to carry PPC after this.

The big takeaway from me was more of what wasn't said. No comments about extreme upwind angles or upwind speed. My guess is there wasn't enough wind for it to really do it's thing. That's how I felt about the 3.1m Paia. I could get it up and going in 30 knots but wasn't really impressed. Then when it was 35/40 knots the light came on and I was blown away.

I was feeling a bit anxious seeing the new low end numbers but now hearing the Hydrocraft report I really think the 3.5m will be the right call. I think we will come to see that useable range isn't ideal range. The Paia, while not ideal on the low end, may have already taught us a lot about double skins and where they are meant to operate. Can't wait to compare.

That looks like 3m conditions so starting on the 2m is pretty good. Sam weighs about 80Kg too but makes everything look easy. Unfortunately almost no footage with the parawing actually in the air...

Upwind angle doesn't appear any better than the other parawing? Maybe it looks as though other bloke in vid is pointing higher?

Agree, which again points to the idea that the double skin sizes shouldn't match up on the same day. A 2m single skin day is probably best for a 3m double skin if you really want the benefits. At least in my experience.

KA also seen doing laps on an Afterburner. Nice clean top surface is all I can say about it...

Assuming you're referring to the Ozone, it was single skin. Couldn't determine size but at least 3.6. I was on 3 V1 PR but under powered much of the time.

Tried it today when right on the bottom end of the wind range and thought it might give me some extra help but it just back stalls the wing bad. Tried a few times and it caused it to drop into the water .
