Light Surf in Iceland - LED Surfboards

Those surfboards steal the spotlight.
While you’re surfing in board shorts right now, spare a though for the surfers up north, who are donning 5mm wetsuits and surfing with LED’s in their surfboards because there isn’t enough daylight in the day to get a decent session in. Oh, and they look super cool.

Iceland, home of the northern lights and certainly not a place you would expect to see thick slabby barrels running left off a reef. But you’re about to see those very things, right down to some incredible time lapse shots of the northern lights.

Spanish surfers Hodei Collazo, Imanol Yeregi and Natxo Gonzalez put on a great display of shortboard surfing shot by both drone and ground based camera. The producer of the movie Igor Bellido does an amazing job of capturing the natural beauty of a country like Iceland, and provides the perfect mix of action and lifestyle shots for a well rounded 5 minutes of surfing.

Those surfboards steal the spotlight though, with embedded LED lights under the glass, they’re works of art that will surely be replicated in the very near future. The lights illuminate the whole board through the foam, and even produce a under-board glow which can be seen on the water surface as they tuck into those chunky barrels. Unfortunately the video doesn’t focus on the boards, so specifics like what battery types are used, and how the lights are controlled aren’t available.
