A certain rider who is well know to all the regulars at Dolls and Brighton, had a very near miss with one of our students yesterday.

The student was bodydragging, kite low, around 35 degrees. Rider charges towards student and when he is 20M away and slightly upwind he hucks a jump, student sees what is about to happen and ducks under the water. Brainless lands virtually on the student and rides between the student and the students kite.

If it were not for the quick think student who pushed his bar and lines under the water Brainless would have been tangled in the students lines and would have pulled the student into his board.

Brainless is a known repeat offended, he is a buddy of another leashless rider famous for the DD...
Still trying to jump in the tiny flat area behind the groin when it is busy.
Insist they have some sort of right to do this crap.

What do we do with these two, they are dangerous and and threatening access in the area.

Ideas? Suggestions to deal with them?

Should we name and shame?

Hey Steve,

These riders need to be approached by the local community as a collective rather than as one or two usual beach police and their actions need to be condemned. It is only when the masses share the conviction of changing their actions that change may result.

If the offenders believe their actions are only upsetting a few then they will not be shifted in their routine. I would grab half a dozen locals to approach them and make sure the message is clear, thet jumping into noobs is not the go.

Name and shame is only going to work if they participate in these forums.

I myself would be reluctant to launch any one named for such an act of recklessness and stupidity. If they asked me for a launch and I was aware of their previous act, I would politely decline and explain that I would not feel comfortable launching someone who is likely to hurt others and/or get our sport banned. It would only take one person to politely decline a launch to really get them thinking... I belive getting them to think is our main priority here. Of course, some one else, not aware of the naming will launch them, or they can self launch, but I believe the one or 2 declines over time may cause them to think before they act in future.

I suggest, that a no launch policy in such situations might prove a positive brain starting move. I also expect the same treatment of myself if I were to behave in such a manner.

For what its worth, I vote for the name and shame.

I would say the best course of action is to talk to them then and there (you might have already done that).

If he is a repeat offender please name and shame so the rest of us know to stay well clear of him / her... and it means we can also each have a word to him/her whenever each of us see him/her...

slave runs nude one on one and kite lessons as well if they dont learn any thing from that at least it will put them off kiting or going out side ever again

I don't know who you're talking about but am sure if I knew their names it would come of no surprise.

I vote for name and shame, I'm sorry if this isn't the general consensus but as locals they will be fully aware of the dangers and that jumping close to shore & around beginners is being selfish and irresponsible. Everyone who kites in these spots regularly, knows we're going through the process of forming a club to help prevent us all getting banned and they will also know the reasons behind it.

If they get angry about being named that's their problem. they should'nt have been behaving like idiots.

Congrats to the noobie who managed to prevent an accident.

I also vote to name and shame them , its people like this that will have the sport banned in the Bay.

We all need to know who they are so we can keep an eye on them and pull them into line when they step out of line.

Naming names wont help, if you know who they are then sort it out at the time.

surely the jumper knew he could have crippled or worse. If he does it again, and really hurts someone, who's to blame, the reckless kiter or the crowd who don't want to educate him?

Hey Slavey,

We,ve all done dumb and dangerous stuff. I'm as guilty as any. If not for Steve and other kiters more experienced than myself, pointing it out and explaining safety, I and others would have had more accidents and probably endangered more people. We are all guilty of not thinking and not considering the consequences at times. I think its great to have a network to point it out and hopefully reduce future occurences.

It seems kind of simple to me. We all do dumb stuff, and this seems like a good solution - I've had people bollock me, and I've had to apologise, and I've also yelled at others from time to time. If they are really bad, just let them know. If they are still really bad then you have to take more serious steps. Gang up on them and tell their Mum. You are always going to have a problem there because it is a small area (behind the groyne) and you have high usage of two groups - learners and porn-stars (a bad combo). I have a nasty feeling that the only solution to this problem is going to be to close it off to one group or the other - this seems to be how it goes in other places once the traffic gets too high. Sad but true.
