I know this is a totally stupid question, but I'm a totally stupid person.......... so I have the right to ask it!!

Anywayz, Wavesailing has always been the pinacle of windsurfing for me, but I have to admit, I've been getting such a buzz from Speedsailing, that I've actually chosen speedsailing ahead of wavesailing on most occassions lately In fact I know people are getting buzzed about friday with strong winds and waves predicted, but all I can think of is that I have an oppurtunity of breaking my speed record this friday........... I'm feeling all internally conflicted............... Yet the pull of speedsailing is greater for me at the moment........... What is happening to me

I agree Hardie, I spent 15 odd years sailing surf and lately have been bitten with the GPS bug. I think in my case though it's an age thing. Wipeouts tend to hurt a bit more once you're pushing 40yrs old and also gear breakages don't tend to happen as much when speed sailing. There's always the opportunity to do some bump and jump riding anyway to satisfy that fix should the conditions turn ballistic. But yeah, I'm with you. Anychance you get to crack 30 knots and feel like Fred Haywood is a good one in my opinion (Finian is just too damned fast to emulate)

I love Love both forms of windsurfing but as there are no waves where

Its all a buzz. Sailing good waves or being on the edge 30 knots and over are both full of adrenalin.
Im a bit like Rex, getting older etc but Ill take a good nor-east day at Longy with waves over runs at Botany in a southerly.
On the other hand small chop/flat water is a buzz on slalom/speed gear. Probably done more of that this season than waves.
Having a drag race with a mate and not backing off is a thrill.

If Thursday pans out for speed, then Friday with the Southerly and a touch of swell it could allow you to redeem yourself at G2

A bit like Laird Hamilton in Neil Pryde's Rigmarole where he's flying along at Sprecklesville on Maui hey Elmo!
Gotta say that is still THE highest jump and subsequent bail I have ever seen.

OH

MY

GOD

No you r showing your age. Me too cos I can remember it.

NOTE to manufacturers: what ever happened to that promo vid thing? Now it is so cheap to produce they should go back to making those vid's each season (or every second). They could do them for about $20 each and sell bucket loads. Collaboration helps too. Starboard / Severne DVD, NP / JP spring to mind.

Bugger it I'll start a new thread on that (and nobody will reply)

Mark, You obviously didn't get a copy of Fanatic's "Addicted to ride". It came out as a promo with their 2006 range, and has some great footage of Victor Fernandez, and the rest of the team riders.

Harrow.

Stalling to drop deeper into the pit, charging the line, floaty weightless jumps, scoring the same wave with a buddy etc etc get me buzzing all the time, even when i day dream about it... sad but true.

Time to wake up and smell the beans.

What do you call this kind of sailing:

Is it freestyle or wave? There not breaking waves, but their doing the same sort of moves as if they were. Bit of a mix?

Miller I got a hard on too. Cheers

Speed is hardcore, I think the potential for injury is higher (anything over about 35kn is downright bloody silly) and it is what can keep WS'ing in the news (when we kick the yellow pages yacht's A$$ BIG TIME). It is good to do in combination with other disciplines, but not by itself only.

But wavesailing keeps me alive. I'd cut my wrists if waves ceased to exist worldwide and all we could do is go back n forth

Because of where I live, it's got to be speed, but I would love to try real waves. But then, the old dog new tricks could be a problem .
This year, when our season takes off, I'll get a GPS just to gauge myself and compare with a mate in WA
I know you are into speed hardie, same as elmo, how about posting some GPS results to give us wind deprived FNQ guys a target. I reckon Troppo (sorry mate), on wave gear at Green Island, will give you a real run for your money
Just be fun to know what you guys are doing. Only one GPS windsurfer (another old bastard) here, and he scored a 30 knott on his first day, is this any good ? I'm guessing a 35 on freeride gear on open water, would be a good target, or is this too easy or hard ?

Cheers

mmm, heres my take, I was hooked on speed sailing, had some good gear, was going to get the best stuff I could for speed sailing, then 1 day, I ventured in the waves! Immediately I sold all my slalom based kit, and bought more wave oriented gear, NP Alpha sails, JP freestyle wave.

Now here lies the problem, I have gone back and done some drag racing on flat water but im done with it after about 30 minutes or so, that drug has worn off, its still fun, but once tasted never forgotten, where waves are continually varied.

I will still have a few flat water days here and there, but the ocean is for me.

I guess half my problem is my motocross/supercross background leads me to the more exciting aspect of windsurfing.

But, respect to each person for their own buzz addiction.

Im with Miller and Mark. I am so addicted to wavesailing I am currently on medication and counseling
Mineral has a good point though. I have trashed myself more in the last 3 years windsurfing than I have in 15 years of surfing. I dont know how long I can keep this up. I have a screwed back, tennis elbow, surfers ear, Ganglion on wrist, dodgy ankle and due for a knee reconstruction this winter Im one @#$%ed up person and Im not even 30 yet
So it looks like I will be joining you at Pinnapoo in a few years Mineral... NOOO!!!

Hi Kremo,

Would love it down mexico way, one day

I'm gonna go for the Navi GPS, from Pommy Land web site.
If your Russian Mafia mates can do better, let me know for sure
Next time over time, I'll order, no hurry, still only crappy wind on the coast

We keep finding empty vodka bottles in the sand at Green Island, very strange ?

If you ever come back up here, we can compete in the rum V vodka olympics Yahhhhhh.

Hay Greenie, you sound like a "young Mineral" Kamikaze approach, and hope body takes the bashing
Big tip, the body has a goooood memory, a few years down the track the body reminds you Oi!! remember back when you did ...... well now ya gonna pay[}:)] Ooohhhh the pain.
Creaking and groaning, needing a bit of airostart to get going, and worse, when your off the boil and no conditioning, its a bitch getting through that first few weeks
But must admit every now and then those waves start whispering "come an play Come out to plaaaaayyyyy".[}:)]

If you could manage 35 knots in open water on freeride gear then, you are sailing at an elite level........ So no thanks, no comparisons with you.

30 knots is 55.6 km an hour, and not so hard to do. My peak is 65.6 kn/h (which is 35.3 knots), and that was on dead flat water, with slalom gear, in 27 knots of wind. Have now done a number of mid 60's runs, which is about 35 knots, they were all on very flat water, with slalom gear. To go faster, I know I need better fins, and better sails, which are my next purchases. I'd say there is no way at my current skill level that I could ever do 35 knots in open water. Happy to compare speeds though.

Rather than compare outright speed - it would be more interesting/fairer to compare speed effiency ie. Board speed/wind speed.
therefore Hardie had 35.3knt board/27kntwind = 1.3074 effiency rating.

CAN YOU BEAT THAT??
