'The Gold Coast Broadwater'

An authority on water quality says Gold Coast waterways remain healthy, but the Broadwater's quality has dipped in the past 12 months.

Perhaps more scientific evidence of the need for dredging in the area, the latest Waterway Ecosystem Health Report Card has been released and it shows the Broadwater has gone from a B-plus to a B-minus in water quality.

Griffith University Associate Professor Rod Connolly says the water quality in most rivers and creeks either improved of stayed the same.

'The Broadwater has suffered a little bit from the big rains that have flushed the estuarine material out to the Broadwater,' he said.

'In the short-term that caused higher turbidity levels, more sediment in the water and so the water quality is poorer.'
