Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race goes both ways

'East Coast Route - Heemskirk Consolidated Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race 2008' ORCV

Labor Member for Franklin Ross Butler today launched the 37th Heemskirk Consolidated Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race at the Derwent Sailing Squadron in Hobart. Mr Butler said that the race was a great boost for the community and brought increased trade to local businesses, as well as providing entertainment for local residents and sailing enthusiasts alike.

'Tasmania provides a spectacular backdrop for sailing and boasts challenging and unpredictable waters,' Mr Butler said.

This is the first time in its history that the race will be conducted down Tasmania's west and east coasts simultaneously.

A fleet of about 20 yachts is expected to contest the West Coast route and about 30 on the East Coast course.

The two routes add significantly to community interest in the fleet of ocean racing yachts sailing to Hobart for the summer festival.

Sailing races in Tasmania now include the Sydney to Hobart, Launceston to Hobart and two Melbourne to Hobart races.

'In addition to the new East Coast race we now also have the Salamanca Series, which comprises the Port Phillip Cock of the Bay, Melbourne to Hobart, East Coast route and the Wrest Point King of the Derwent.'

Mr Butler said the State Government was a proud supporter of the event and had contributed $3,000.
