Launched in 2006, the Maritime Medal is an award scheme to recognise role models, both individuals and groups, who have made an outstanding or sustained contribution to the maritime community.

NSW Maritime Acting Deputy Chief Executive Steve Dunn said that the Maritime Medal recognises outstanding contributions in the area of boating safety, the environment or the community.

'I encourage those of you who were considering nominating a person or a group for the Maritime Medal to do so soon as applications close on Friday 30 September,' said Mr Dunn.

Mr Dunn said that the awards are a way of expressing thanks to those people who are making extraordinary efforts for the maritime community.

Nominations are judged by the NSW Maritime Medal Committee which includes representatives of NSW Maritime's peak advisory body. Winners will receive their award at a ceremony to be held in November.
