BYC's 43rd Annual Governor's Cup International Junior Match Racing Championship will take place July 14th-19th, 2009. Races are held in the ocean near the Balboa or Newport pier off beautiful Newport Beach, California.

Sailed in twelve identical Gov Cup 21's, designed by Commodore Alan Andrews, and purchased by Balboa Yacht Club members, this event is an exciting experience for participants, committee members and observers. The schedule includes a day for registration and practice, four days of round robin competition, followed by semi-final and final matches on the fifth day.

The brochures are ready to go out to Yacht Clubs all over the world to invite participation from the racing world's best young racers. They are available on the web site at www.govcupracing.comor by following the link at balboayachtclub.com or by email to Becky Lenhart at [email protected]or by calling 949-673-3515, ext. 133. Recent participants have come from all over the United States, as well as Europe, South America, Australia and New Zealand.

The Governor's Cup is the oldest junior international regatta in the world featuring a two boat, or 'match' racing format with each boat competing against only one other boat at a time. The scoring is based on cumulative win-loss records. Unique among racing events held at Balboa Yacht Club are the on-the-water umpires who provide quick decisions during racing when infractions occur. Basically, umpires settle RRS Part 2 (when boats meet) protests on the water instead of in the protest room following racing. Rarely is there a hearing ashore or after sailing. Each evening following racing the umpires meet with the competitors to go over controversial calls, flags, rules issues, etc.

Teams are chosen on the basis of their resumes and information submitted by the challenging clubs' bid packages. Housing is provided for teams by members in their homes nearby during the event. The Gov Cup is an ISAF Grade 111 Match Racing Event. The top two US finishing teams are invited to the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron's Youth International Match Racing Championships, held in early 2010.
