Whitsunday Sailing Club welcomes Tsar Nationals 2010

Whitsunday Sailing Club Flag Officer Terry Archer has welcomed the opportunity to host the 2010 Australian Tasar championships on Pioneer Bay from July 3-10.

The successful submission has strengthened the opportunity for the popular sailing venue to be accepted to host the Tasar World series when an Australian venue is considered.

But first Rear Commodore Terry Archer has plans in place to make the 2010 Nationals are success for the Club and the class association.

He has secured the services of the highly respected Victorian race management team of twin brothers Ross and Kevin Wilson, who have already called the Whitsundays their 'winter address' in recent years with the official roles in the successful Meridien Marinas Airlie Beach Race Week and Audi Hamilton Island Race Week events.

The Wilson twins missed the opportunity to top up their sun tan in 2008 when the major Whitsunday Festival of Sail regattas clashed with their official race management duties at the Beijing Olympics.

They are personally dedicated to understanding the importance of their roles in the sailing community and their appointment has set a strong foundation for the series which promises to attract a fleet in excess of 60 crews representing all the State associations.

The relaxed and friendly environment of Airlie Beach combined with the excellent championship racing courses on Pioneer Bay has the important infrastructure in place with the choice of five star apartments to quiet van parks and a choice of restaurants within short walking distance from the club.

However while Airlie Beach has built an international reputation as a friendly tourist town it now has the potential to add more important dollars to the community with the sailing club rivalling other major Australian destinations to host future national and international regattas.

Hosting of the Tasar Nationals is an important step forward with the event and media awareness promising to further highlight what the local sailors have been boasting for years, that they sail and play in a unique aquatic paradise.

Normally the winter months in the tropical Whitsunday Islands are blessed with ideal weather conditions and the choice of early July will provide the crews who represent clubs from the colder southern latitudes to test their tactical racing strategy in a pleasant winter sailing environment.

Meanwhile Terry Archer the Wilson Twins and the loyal team of Whitsunday Sailing Club volunteers will continue with the task of making sure the 2010 Tasar Nationals will be a well managed championship series and further promote the North Queensland venue which can claim the status as a premier sailing championship venue for all dinghy, catamaran and offshore IRC class yacht racing classes.
