World Masters Games: Emotional opening as sailors pay their respects

A minute's silence for fallen sailors Andrew Short and Sally Gordon before the commencement of today's sailing events at the Sydney 2009 World Masters Games set the scene for an emotional first day at the sailing regatta.

A sports chaplain described how both Short and Gordon were well respected and well liked people in the sailing community.
?
Everyone then bowed their heads for a minute's silence before donning black ribbons as a mark of respect for their sailing comrades.
?
Gordon was registered for the games and would have been competing at the Woollahra Sailing Club today.
?
The sessions today saw Norm Marsh (AUS) make a strong start to lead the Radial 35+ competition with three points.

Mark Kennedy (AUS) won both races in the Radial 45+ event, while Olympic sailing coach Michael Fletcher (AUS) won the over 65s Tasar event.

Lew Verdon (AUS) leads the Radial 65+ after a first and second in the opening two races.

Competition continues Tuesday at 10am at both the Woollahra Sailing Club, Rose Bay and at the Dobroyd Aquatic centre, Rodd Point.
