International 420 Class World Championship. Strong northeasterly wind powered today's regattas.
The Mens' 420 Class sailors ran three action-packed races today, beginning at 1 pm. Womens' 420 competitors hit the water around 3:30 pm. A total of 206 crews have arrived at Riva for this important event: 122 for the Mens' 420 Championship and 84 for the Womens' 420 Championship.
World Champions Phil Sparks and Ben Gratton (GBR 52759), with their 19 points, arrived at the top of today's ranking: 2 prestigious first-place victories and one discarded twenty-third place finish. Francesco Falcetelli and Gabriele Franciolini (ITA 53577) (scores 1, 7, 4, 4, (23), 4) are holding the second-rank position. In third: Antonios Tsimpoukelis and George Karonis (GRE 53161) (11, 2, (dsq), 2, 12, 3). Among 25 top-scoring Mens' 420 Class competitors, there are eight Italian crews present.
In the Women's 420 Class, Alexandra Maloney and Bianca Barbarich - Bacher (NZL 52576) hold a substantial lead (scores 2, 1, 1, 5, 3). Camilla Marino and Claudia Soricelli are in second position (scores 1, 5, 2, 11, 1). Roberta Caputo and Benedetta Barbiero are in third (scores 6, 6, 3, 3, 9). Again, also in the 420 Womens' Championship, among the the 25 top-scoring crews, nine are Italian.
No races scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday). On Sunday morning, the Womens' 420 Class Championship will run 2 make-up races, in order to complete their Qualifying Series races. Final Series races will then begin with warning signal at 1 pm on Sunday.
