As I mentioned in Part 1 of Boat Theft - another side to the GFC, the clever DataDot technology does tend to deter thieves particularly the experienced professional.

Now, in what must be seen as good news for boat owners and bad news for the thieves, DataDot technology now has an arm that will concentrate on the marine industry.

Sydney-based businessman Simon Jackson heads the new arrangement and has already won vital support from the NSW Police, NSW Maritime, the Marina Industries Association of Australia (MIAA) and the Boating Industry Association of NSW.

Simon admits opportunistic thieves (many of whom are no doubt morons!) may not be deterred by DataDot simply because they're unaware of it, but the professionals certainly are.

'And with more than one million motor vehicles now protected by DataDotdna is becoming more widely known,' he added.

'Additionally, extensive signage will soon appear around marinas and waterways in general advising people that DataDotdna is protecting the boats and equipment in a specific area'.

A comprehensive scheme, given the name 'Be Safe and Secure Marina Theft Deterrent Program', has been endorsed also by Crime Stoppers.

The program identifies major objectives;

. To deter thieves from targeting a marina
. To assist police in identifying and authenticating stolen property
. Improve the accuracy of reporting stolen (or missing) property with traceable identification features
. Improve the opportunities to investigate and search for property suspected of being stolen
. Prosecute offenders charged with 'theft' rather than the lesser 'goods in custody' offence.

So, what exactly is DataDotdna and how is it applied to a vessel, an engine, boat trailer or assorted marine equipment?

A DataDotdna marine kit is now available for individuals to easily apply to boats, trailers, outboard engines and general marine equipment.

It comes in the form of a pressure pack and is as easily applied as underarm deodorant!

Each of the thousands of tiny dots sprayed on to the components to be protected contain a PIN number that can be registered either via the form that comes with the kit or via the DataDotdna website.

The pin number can be cross-referenced with a vessel's HIN an engine serial number and a boat trailer VIN number or perhaps a driver's licence to prove identity and therefore ownership.

At only $220 for a kit, I'd rate DataDotdna as the best buy since the proverbial sliced bread.

Really, it's an absolute must have, not only for the boat owner, but for all who own valuable items worthy of protection, from boats and marine equipment to motorcycles, camera gear, home entertainment systems.
