Fleet away in 24th Sydney to Gold Coast Race

3:26 AM Sat 25 Jul 2009 GMT
Brilliant sunshine and a light westerly, around five knots for the start of the 384 nautical mile race from Sydney to Southport.

Bob Oatley's Wild Oats 10, Graeme Woods Judel Vroljik 52 Wot Now and Geoff Ross' Reichel Pugh 55 Yendys started on the Committee Boat end of the line of Nielsen Bay. Andrew Short's Price Waterhouse Cooper's Shockwave was near the pin, ahead of her was Michael Hiatt's Farr 55 Living Doll, over early and had to go back for a restart.

The newest boat in the fleet, Robert Date's red hulled CC52 Scarlet Runner nailed the start perfectly and was fast away.

As the fleet now heads down the harbour, Price Water House Cooper Shockwave and Wild Oats 10 are fighting for the lead with Peter Harburg's Reichel Pugh 66 now coming through the fleet.

Up ahead the wind at North Head is much more south easterly, so there is a transition ahead.

More news soon.
