With research revealing that 82 per cent of young Australians have 'no idea' what they want to do with their careers, various industries around the country, including the marine sector, decided 'it's time to get aLife'.

Sponsored by the BIA NSW and Australian Marine Industries Federation, aLife is a free, interactive DVD and website to be used in tandem as a resource for teachers, careers advisors, parents, industry members and young people to explore different career options, with information on opportunities and choices.

It features interactive videos, industry links and mobile phone connectivity.

With aLife, there is access to 100 different career profiles, where passionate people talk about their job and explain what they love about it, how they got where they are and where their job will take them in the future.

As part of the sponsorship, the first careers featured are Boat Building, Marine Mechanics and Marine Sales.

Since it launched in early December, aLife has been distributed to more than 3000 schools, TAFEs, Unis and training organizations. In February, there will be a mass distribution to students.

According to Roy Privett, GM of BIA NSW, the initiative is part of the organisation's 'obligation to promote the industry and assist in securing a future supply of skilled employees for our industry'.

'This is a tremendous vehicle to continuing interest in our industry,' he said.
In addition, BIA NSW released a NSW Marine Industries Careers Guide at SIBS last year, which was then distributed to NSW High Schools. Wider distribution will be carried out throughout 2009.
