Holm family tradition carried on in Brisbane to Gladstone race

Deagon ocean racing skipper Peter Holm will claim a special place in the history of the award winning Brisbane to Gladstone Race over the Easter weekend.

It is fair to say that Peter Holm was born into a sailing family and he will achieve a personal career milestone by recording his 40th race when Queensland Cruising Yacht Club Life Member Clarrie Nobel fires the start signal for the 61st Blue Water classic at 11am on Good Friday.

Peter will have wife Kris, who will celebrate her 10th race on the fore-deck, when their comfortable 17.4m cruising ketch Marriah sets sail.

Marriah will have the traditional bottle of rum stowed in her liquor locker to celebrate the occasion which will also include offering a toast to Peter's father the late Ivan 'Skipper' Holm when they sail abeam of Lady Musgrave Island lagoon.

Ivan Holm was a remarkable seafaring skipper who sailed with the inaugural race fleet in 1949 before building his own ketch Laurabada which established an unparalleled record of 43 consecutive races.

The Holm family will continue the unbroken 61 year old Gladstone Race tradition when Peter Holm and his wife Kris set their race strategy for their history making voyage.

'I've grown up with The Gladstone Race being a significant feature of our family heritage and while the 40th will be special for me and Kris we believe it's far more important to keep the Holm history alive' Peter Holm said.
