Anglers are being reminded to make sure they have a valid NSW recreational fishing licence, before they drop a line in this Easter, NSW Minister for Primary Industries Ian Macdonald said.

'A licence is necessary for all types of fishing activity including netting for prawns, spear fishing, shellfish gathering and angling, and must be carried on the person at all times' Minister Macdonald said.

'Easter is a very popular time for fishing, and we encourage people to enjoy their fishing over the long weekend, but be mindful of the rules.

'But while most people are doing the right thing, unfortunately, we still see a small number of people fishing illegally.

'People must make sure they have a valid fishing licence before they go fishing and comply with a range of fish size and bag limits' Minister Macdonald said.

NSW DPI compliance manager, Glenn Tritton, said fisheries officers would be out in force both day and night over the Easter long weekend to ensure fishers are complying with the fishing rules.

'Fishers should also ensure they know the specific rules for activities such as prawn netting, spearfishing, shellfish gathering and using hoop nets and lobster traps' Mr Tritton said.

'All fishing rules are listed on the website www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fisheries/recreational/regulations.

'Fishers can expect good quality fish to be found in the State's waterways and beaches.

'People found without a recreational fishing licence risk on the spot penalties of $200.'

The types of licences available include:

$6 for three days
$12 for one month
$30 for one year
$75 for three years

Licences can be bought from more than 1000 outlets, including major bait and tackle shops, New South Wales DPI Fisheries Offices, over the phone on 1300 369 365 or online.
