After three days of regattas in light easterly breezes of approximately five to ten knots Vincenzo Onorato's Mascalzone Latino has won the Audi Coppa Europa Smeralda 888 for host Club the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda (YCCS).

Second place went to Prince Charles de Bourbon of the Yacht Club de Monaco with his Vamos Mi Amor and while last year's winner Guido Miani, also of Monaco, took third. Together with helmsman Onorato were tactician Adrian Stead, Matteo Savelli, Pietro Manunta and Giulia Mazzotti.

'A really thrilling regatta in possibly the most beautiful setting in the world. I'm obviously pleased with this victory but I particularly enjoyed the whole atmosphere of the event, it was a gentleman's regatta!' commented Vincenzo Onorato at the conclusion of today's racing.

Despite light winds the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's Race Committee managed to set five windward-leeward races. One windward leeward was completed on each of the first two days on the waters off Porto Cervo, both of which saw victory go to Mascalzone Latino. As winds picked up today, Sunday 29, three windward-leewards were raced with Prince Charles de Bourbon winning the first two and dangerously narrowing the gap between Mascalzone in first and his Vamos Mi Amor in second to just two points. The third and final race of the day was therefore decisive: Roberto Mangifesta's Fire took first place for the Yacht Club de Monaco while Vamos Mi Amor took second ahead of Mascalzone Latino, narrowing the gap to just one point but remaining in second place overall.

Prince Charles de Bourbon was happy with his team's performance: 'It was a challenging and beautiful day of racing with almost perfect wind and sea conditions. Two consecutive victories and, most importantly, we finished ahead of the excellent Mascalzone Latino team three times and ended up just one point behind them in the overall classification.'

The New York Yacht Club team headed by Charlie Shumway placed sixth overall while the Royal Yacht Squadron, with helmsman Bruce Huber, placed ninth. The Gstaad Yacht Club of Switzerland, the 'highest' Yacht Club in the world, located at 1050 metres above sea-level, rounded out the bottom of the classification.

Prizes were awarded on the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda's Pool Terrace and Charles L. Shumway presented the New York Yacht Club's burgee to YCCS Commodore Riccardo Bonadeo.

The event, which the YCCS has been organizing for twinned and associated Yacht Clubs since 1998, closes the first half of the YCCS season 2008. The YCCS sporting calendar will continue in September with the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup (September 1-6) and the Rolex Swan Cup (September 8 - 14).
