Queensland boaties have been hit with rises of up to 80-100% for boat registration, explained away by the government as being a result of "increased demand in boating infrastructure".

According to Queensland Transport (Maritime Safety Queensland), there are more than 219,643 boats registered in the state - more than any other state in the country. The extra fees are needed to accommodate the increased numbers of recreational boats taking to the state's waterways, requiring public boat ramps, jetties, pontoons and dredging.

On the website www.transport.qld.gov.au/Home/General_information/Boating/Boating_news_and_events/
the department states that "fees have been increased to provide funding for new and improved public boating infrastructure throughout Queensland. Fees are calculated on the length of your ship. Exemptions from registration fees are given to totally and permanently incapacitated war pensioners".

Fee increases take effect from Monday 20 October. Boat registrations are growing at 6%, with around 10,000 boats joining the scene each year, and one in five Queenslanders holds some form of marine license.
