South Pacific Teams Sailing Regatta 2009 - Day 3 and 4

As predicted the south east trade winds have returned resulting some very competitive teams racing in near perfect conditions with the wind topping out at 10-12 knots each day.

. Prime Minister John Key is presently visiting Rarotonga and was at the regatta site today; he took a short cruise and inspected the course and sailors after attending an official function at a nearby island (motu) in Muri Lagoon. The regatta continues to draw a stream of spectators ranging from kiwis escaping the winter, local sailors and a visiting international judge.

The team coaches have noted an improvement amongst the competitors which has lifted the regatta to a high level and is delivering some very exciting racing. The presence of submerged coral heads on the course has added an extra tactical dimension for the sailors and work for the boat repair team.

The results as at the end of day 4 demonstrate just how close the racing has become with Rarotonga leading on 11.5 points, Aitutaki and Victoria tied in second place on 9.5 points, New Zealand Girls are in Fourth place 7.5 points followed by New Zealand boys 6.5 points, South Australia girls are on 4 points and South Australia Boys are in seventh place on 3.5 points.

The regatta benefits from the continued support of the local sailors and interested people who have been extremely generous with their time and use of their facilities and equipment. The success of the local teams reflects the high priority placed on youth sailing and making the sport of sailing affordable and accessible to young sailors from both mainland Rarotonga and the outer islands.
